You are likely here because you are turning 65 and newly eligible for Medicare. Or perhaps you are over 65 and now finally retiring and need to purchase your own insurance. Congrats! We know that Medicare and the choices you must make can seem daunting and overwhelming, so don’t face it alone! We explain and educate people about Medicare day in and day out.

Commonly people become eligible for Medicare upon turning 65 and coverage can typically start the first day of their birth month. Others may become eligible early due to a disability. Medicare is made up of 2 parts: A & B. Part A is hospital insurance and typically is free if you’ve worked 10 years or 40 quarters. Part B is medical insurance and costs most Medicare beneficiaries $174.70/month in 2024. To enroll in Medicare A and/or B you can do so online at www.ssa.gov or calling your local social security office. If you are already receiving your social security benefits, you will not need to sign yourself up for Medicare. The social security office will automatically enroll you into Medicare A & B and you will receive your insurance card about 3.5 months before your birthday.

Medicare alone does not cover people’s medical or hospital expenses at 100%. Medicare A & B has deductibles and coinsurance that without additional coverage is a potential risk to beneficiaries. Many people will want to consider purchasing a Medicare Supplement plan and Part D drug plan upon becoming eligible for Medicare to help cover where Medicare leaves off.

Some things to know about Medicare:

Original Medicare has no network which means you have the freedom to doctor where you want.

Original Medicare has no pre-existing conditions or health questions.

Original Medicare covers some but not all hospital and medical related expenses. See Med Supp & Part D tabs.

If you do not enroll in Medicare when first eligible you will have to show proof of credible employer coverage otherwise potentially face a penalty.
